The Principle
Every organisation needs data/information from which to make its management decisions.
The more accurate and comprehensive this data, the better the quality of the options available.
Telecommunications is like any other management information in this regard, but perhaps uniquely, without communications every organisation would cease to function in a short timeframe.
Therefore, if an organisations' communications are analogous to its 'life blood', then management information allows decisions and actions to be made which improves the 'health' of the 'organisational body'.
Example
Many corporates have a Telephone Policy consisting of such elements as the maximum number of rings allowed before an external call must be answered, the information contained in the greeting statement, the manner of the greeting etc.
- So how many of such companies know what the average number of calls actually is before being picked up say last week, yesterday, every Monday between 9 and 12 am ?
- How many callers rang off without being answered last year?
- What is the busiest time of day and day of the week?

Mobiles
Telecommunications mobile voice and data if logged correctly can provide useful information. As an example, how many calls are made from base to the field staff and how much time is incurred by doing so, that perhaps say a broadcast text message could replace?
How much GPRS data is used by individuals in a mobile phone user group, that could be more competitively supplied as a 'bundle' say ?
Simply, decisions need to be based on facts, not impressions, perceptions, beliefs etc.

We have an ability to measure call traffic by extension of a PBX (subject to the PBX supporting this option).
Clients can set a flag to alert themselves or other(s) by email, sms etc, so that should some kind of user definable call be made eg a premium rate call, then the system will email the client at the end of the day, or even when the call has just been finished.
Report Optimisation
Different reports can be automatically generated for differing people e.g. The Sales Director wants a different report than the Financial Director, and the Managing Director wants both reports each Monday morning at 9am !
